INDUSTRIA DE DISE...O TEXTIL S. (ITX.MC) stock analysis, October 16, 2026: uptrend intact, resistance just overhead

Published October 16, 2026 · updated 2026-10-31 · ITX.MC chart, levels and live analysis

Industria de Diseño Textil (ITX.MC), the owner of Zara, closed at 55.86 EUR on October 16, 2026. That is 3.7% higher over five days, while the S&P 500 ETF SPY fell 2.0%. The balance of evidence leans positive for the next two to six weeks, with medium conviction. The daily and weekly trends agree, but the stock has not cleared its nearest resistance at 56.53, and the breakout math falls short of 3 to 1.

Why it matters

The story of the autumn is steady growth at Inditex while a rival stumbles. In its Morningstar update, Inditex reported 9% year-on-year sales growth from August 1 through September 7, in constant currency and despite the Middle East conflict and elevated transport costs. That is close to the 9.2% rise of the first half, which totaled 19.76 billion euros. Growth did not slow as the second half began, and that is the fact the market keeps coming back to. On September 11, Reuters described the next leg: new US stores in Denver, Phoenix and Pittsburgh, and Massimo Dutti and Bershka arriving in New York.

Then Shein, the fast-fashion competitor, reported. Its first results as a public company, covered by the Financial Times, showed adjusted profit down 66.6% to $228mn and revenue up less than 1%. The FT noted that European sales fell nearly 14% once the duty-free exemption for low-value imports ended, and it named Zara among the beneficiaries. The one-month gain of 5.8% suggests investors have already given Inditex credit for this. Today's price of 55.86 EUR is a recent peak: the October 15 close was the same, and the stock sits 5.5% below its 52-week high of 59.10.

The last five days are not explained by any headline. The news feed has nothing on Inditex after September 30, so the move was not driven by new company information. Of the 3.7% gain, the market contributed nothing: SPY fell 2.0%, and on October 16 alone it lost 1.1% while ITX.MC rose 0.8%. The consumer discretionary sector ETF XLY slipped 0.3% over five days, so the stock beat its sector by about 4.1 points. This was mostly the stock's own strength, and the sector helped little.

The argument about ITX.MC has two sides. The positive case is that a cheap competitor is losing its edge as import duties rise, while Inditex keeps growing near 9% and pushes into the US. The cautious case is about cost and regulation. Bloomberg reports that Middle East tensions are raising garment production costs, including at suppliers to Zara. The BBC reports that Bristol has become the first UK city to ban fast fashion advertising. That is small today, but it shows the direction of public attitudes. On valuation, 24 analysts rate the stock a buy with a mean price target of 60.39 EUR, 7.5% above the current price. Targets range from 41.5 to 67 EUR, so the market cap of about 174 billion EUR is supported by opinion that is far from uniform.

What the evidence says

The long-term thesis is intact. The price is above its 40-week average and above the 200-day average at 54.43, and the 50-day average at 55.36 sits between them. The stock is up 5.2% over six months but still slightly down for the year, at -0.9%. That fits a recovery that is rebuilding toward the 59.10 high, not a stock at its highs. The phase is an advance within a wider range, with the 52-week low of 46.54 now 20% below the price.

For the next two to six weeks the balance of evidence leans positive, with medium conviction: two of four points. The daily trend runs with the weekly uptrend, which is the strongest support. The stock also leads XLY over 50 days by 0.9%. Against that, it lags the S&P 500 over 50 days by 0.5%, which runs against the trend, and that is why conviction stays at medium.

The strongest case against the positive reading is stretch. The 14-day RSI is 68.5, close to overbought, and the stock is up 5.8% in a month. Volume today was 48.1% above its 20-day average, which shows interest but can also mark a short-term peak when price has not yet broken resistance. The market backdrop was also weak this week. A stock that rises while SPY falls 2.0% is either showing real strength or is due to catch down. The aligned trends and the steady sales growth lean toward strength, but the stretch keeps this from being a high-conviction reading.

Levels that matter

The structure holds above 55.36, the 50-day average, and the first crack would come below it. The trend ends below 54.91, a swing zone that sits just above the 200-day average at 54.43. A weekly close under 54.91 would break the sequence of higher lows. Further down, 52.64 and then the 50 round number are the next supports.

The breakout level is a daily close above 56.53 on volume above its 20-day average. From there the first target is 57.52, at 0.7 to 1 reward to risk, and the second is the 52-week high at 59.10, at 1.8 to 1. The stop sits at 55.09, which is the 50-day average minus a quarter of the 1.08 ATR. The math does not reach 3 to 1. It would take a target beyond the 60.00 round number, or a stop much closer to the entry, to change that. Above 59.10 the next markers are 60.00 and 70.00.

What would change the picture

The rule is a weekly close below 54.91. That would put the price under the swing zone that defines the trend and leave it close to the 200-day average. The non-price fact that would most likely do it is a drop in sales growth well below the 9% pace seen through September 7. It would mean the Shein-driven gain is not translating into the company's own numbers.
