iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) stock analysis, October 29, 2026: Small caps back above key trend line, evidence even

Published October 29, 2026 · IWM chart, levels and live analysis

iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) has climbed to $284.07, up 2.7% in five days while the S&P 500 slipped, and it now sits just under its 50-day average at $284.64. That move lifted the small-cap basket above the weekly trend line that kept the earlier reading negative. The balance of evidence is now even, with low conviction: the trend has turned up, but the fund still trails the broad market over 50 days.

Why it matters

The news flow that frames today is about large caps, not small ones. Futures fell late on October 28 as Alphabet sold off after its earnings report, while Microsoft rose 3% after hours on a beat, according to CNBC. Nasdaq-100 futures dropped 0.9% and S&P 500 futures 0.4%. IWM went the other way, up about 1.0% on the day while SPY was down 0.55%. Nothing in the news ties that gap to specific Russell 2000 holdings, so the cleanest description is a day when money stepped away from the megacap earnings reaction and the broad small-cap basket absorbed some of it. No fund-flow figures are in the news, and the product launches of recent weeks, such as the new T. Rowe Price small-cap ETF, say little about demand for this one.

On attribution, the market explains little of the five-day gain. SPY is down 0.1% over five days, IWM is up 2.7%, so almost all of the move is specific to small caps. No sector benchmark applies to a basket this broad, and the news does not isolate which part of the index led. Over one month the picture is closer: IWM +1.8%, SPY +0.9%. Year to date IWM is up 15.4% against 13.3% for SPY. Over longer windows, though, IWM trails: by 1.9% over 50 days and 4.8% over 200 days. The recent bounce is a catch-up, not yet a change in leadership.

The debate about the basket is about rates and earnings. The case for small caps leans on a profit rebound: Calamos' Brandon Nelson expects small-cap earnings growth to accelerate in 2027 while S&P 500 growth slows to 15.1%, per Morningstar. Bank of America argues that quality and value names inside the Russell 2000 have thrived in past hiking cycles, after the Fed lifted rates to 3.75%–4% and with two more hikes expected this year.

The case against is structural and rate-driven. Morningstar's small-cap ETF review notes that only 5% of small-cap index companies have wide moats versus 75% of large caps, and that the small-cap index has lagged large caps by 285% cumulative since 2002. With Treasury yields at 19-year highs, Bank of America Securities sees one of the best buying opportunities for bonds against stocks in two decades. JPMorgan's team earlier ran a long Nasdaq, short Russell 2000 trade that returned 7.9% in four weeks, and has since turned tactically positive on tech. As for valuation, an ETF carries no analyst price target, so the question is the earnings path of the basket, which is exactly what the two camps dispute. The wider earnings backdrop is firm: third-quarter profits are expected to grow 24% for US companies and 23% for Europe, Bloomberg reports.

What the evidence says

The long-term picture has improved. The previous report, on October 16, 2026, was negative with medium conviction: price was below its 40-week average, the weekly trend was down, and that reading would be wrong on a weekly close above $279.48. Price has moved above that level and above the 40-week and 10-week averages, and it is above the 200-day average at $278.64. The long-term trend is now up, so the earlier thesis of a basket in a downtrend is broken. The phase is early recovery: the fund is 6.9% below its 52-week high of $305.09 and 24% above its low of $229.11.

For the next two to six weeks the evidence is even, and conviction is low, zero of four on our checklist. The weekly trend is up, but the fund is in a pullback against it that is not yet stretched, with RSI at 58. Meanwhile it lags the S&P 500 by 1.9% over 50 days, against the trend. Trend and relative strength do not agree, so neither side earns a lean.

The strongest case for a positive reading is real: price is above every major average except the 50-day, the five-day gain is 2.7 points ahead of SPY, and year-to-date the fund still leads the market. That case does not tip the balance because the fund has not cleared the 50-day average, it still trails SPY over longer windows, and volume in today's session is 87% below its 20-day average. That figure is from a partial session, so it is a caution rather than a verdict, but a bounce on thin trade has not proved anything yet.

Levels that matter

The structure holds above $279.48, a swing zone that sat as the line between the old downtrend and the new one. Below it, the first crack in the recovery appears, with $275 round-number support next. The trend ends below $270.29, another swing zone; a weekly close there would put the fund back under the area that defined the recovery.

The breakout level is a daily close above $284.64, the 50-day average, on volume above its 20-day average. From there the first target is $288.27, with a stop at $278.59, a quarter of an ATR under the $279.48 swing zone. That gives 0.6 to 1, so the math does not reach the 3 to 1 that makes a breakout worth the risk. The second target, $298.72, gives 2.3 to 1, still short. Only a target further out, with $300 and $303.95 the next levels on the map, or a stop placed closer to price, would lift the ratio to 3 to 1.

What would change the picture

A weekly close below $270.29 would end the upward trend and put the earlier negative reading back in play. The non-price fact that would do it is rates: if the Fed's hiking path proves steeper than the two further hikes already expected, with Treasury yields pushing higher from 19-year highs, the earnings-recovery argument for small caps loses its footing. In the other direction, evidence that small-cap earnings are accelerating ahead of 2027 would give the daily close above $284.64 something to stand on.
