Swisscanto Platinum ETF - CHF (ZPLA.SW) closed at 397.6 CHF on October 16, 2026. That is 7.6% lower over a month and 22.0% lower since the start of the year, even though platinum producers have just reported sharply higher profits. The weekly trend is down and the fund trails the S&P 500, so the balance of evidence leans negative for the next 2–6 weeks, with medium conviction.
Why it matters
The news flow around the platinum theme has been strong, and the price has not followed it. On September 3, Impala Platinum reported net profit of 31.04 billion rand for its fiscal year, against 761 million rand a year earlier, Morningstar noted, driven by higher precious-metal prices and an 11.1 billion rand impairment reversal. A day later, Reuters reported that African Rainbow Minerals lifted annual profit 19% to 3.201 billion rand, as platinum group metal prices outweighed weakness in its coal, iron ore and manganese divisions. These are producers, not a list of what the fund owns. Their results are evidence about the metal the basket tracks, and they describe a year of high platinum prices.
What the market did with that evidence is the useful part. The results were backward-looking, covering the year to June 30. By early September, buyers had already paid for much of it. The fund's recent peak close was 435.4 CHF on September 21, and it has since slipped 8.7% from there. Good profit numbers that the shares cannot build on usually mean the best of the news was already in the price. The fund is also still 37.9% below its 52-week high of 640.1 CHF, so this is a long unwinding, not a fresh wobble.
The broad market explains part of the last week, but not all of it. Over five days ZPLA.SW fell 2.6% while the S&P 500 proxy (SPY) fell 2.0%. No sector fund is available to split out the metals group, so the remainder is the fund's own. On the day, the fund gained 0.7% as SPY lost 1.1%. Over a month the gap is wide: the fund is down 7.6% against a 1.2% gain for SPY, and the year to date is -22.0% against +11.9%. Over 50 days the fund lags SPY by 5.2%. The weakness is specific to platinum, not just the market tide.
The macro backdrop is demanding. On September 10, Morningstar described Brent above $100 a barrel on Gulf supply risks, with the ECB expected to lift its key rate to 2.5% from 2.25%. Another Morningstar summary spoke of U.S. stocks extending losses on Middle East escalation. Rising yields and an oil shock are not obviously kind to a non-yielding metal, though the news does not tie them directly to platinum, so we do not claim they caused the move. The feed also holds no articles arguing a case for or against the fund, and no analyst price targets exist for an ETF, so there is no debate or valuation spread to weigh. The decline is not explained by any single headline.
What the evidence says
The long-term picture is weakened and leaning toward broken. The price sits below its 40-week average and below its 10-week average, which puts the weekly trend down. The 50-day average is 421.95 CHF and the 200-day is 447.06 CHF, both above the price. The fund is 11.95% above its 52-week low of 355.15 CHF, so it has not collapsed to the lows. It is, however, in a drawn-out downtrend after losing more than a third from its high, and nothing yet shows a base forming.
For the next 2–6 weeks the balance of evidence leans negative, with medium conviction: two of four points. The daily trend runs in the same direction as the weekly downtrend, and the fund is lagging the S&P 500 by 5.2% over 50 days. Those two points carry the reading. The other two are missing: the momentum signal is not at an extreme, and there is no confirmed break of support yet. The price is 397.6 CHF, just above the swing zone at 394.53 CHF.
The strongest case against this reading is that the fund is oversold-leaning. RSI is 35.06, close to the level where selling often tires. It also closed up 0.7% on a day SPY fell 1.1%, and the miner earnings show that platinum prices were high through the last year. Trading volume on the latest session was only 72% of its 20-day average, so the selling is not forceful. These points are why conviction is medium and not higher. They do not tip the balance because the price is still below every important average, rallies have met sellers near 400 CHF, and a low-volume bounce inside a downtrend is not a change of trend.
Levels that matter
In a downtrend, the structure holds below 400 CHF. That round number is where sellers have shown up on rallies. Above it come 409.38 CHF, then 419.93 CHF, then the 50-day average at 421.95 CHF and 425 CHF. The weekly trend ends only above 419.93 CHF, a swing zone that sits just under the 50-day average. A rally has to clear that whole cluster before the downtrend can be called over.
The downside breakout level is a daily close below 394.53 CHF. From there the math runs to the 52-week low at 355.15 CHF. The breakout would be wrong above 402.27 CHF, which is 400 CHF plus a quarter of the 14-day ATR of 9.08 CHF. That gives a reward-to-risk of 5.1 to 1, clearing the 3 to 1 that makes a breakout worth the risk. Along the way, support sits at 375 CHF, and 350 CHF lies just below the low. The 52-week low is the only target the math uses.
What would change the picture
The rule is a weekly close above 419.93 CHF. That would put the fund back above the cluster of resistance where the last rally faded and end the weekly downtrend. The non-price fact that would do it is evidence that platinum's strength is feeding through to demand for the metal itself, such as sustained inflows into platinum funds or a clearly tightening supply picture. The producers' profit gains show prices were high. A rising metal price is what would make that a trend instead of a past result.
What to watch
- The 400 CHF round number on any rally, and the 394.53 CHF swing zone on any daily close.
- A weekly close above 419.93 CHF, the 50-day average at 421.95 CHF just above it, and the 40-week average the fund is still below.
- Brent crude, which was above $100 in September amid Gulf supply risks, and bond yields near multiyear highs. The feed carries no scheduled dates, so the next ECB and Federal Reserve meetings are the policy dates to track.
- The next set of platinum producer results, since the early-September reports from Impala Platinum and African Rainbow Minerals are the latest in the feed. No date is given for the next.
- Fund flows and holdings changes, which the news does not mention and which could not be assessed here.
- Relative strength against the S&P 500. SPY gained 1.2% over a month, and a fund that stops lagging it would remove one of the two reasons behind the negative reading.
