Report of 2026-10-31.
BlackBerry (BB) fell 8.4% on October 30, 2026 to $8.42, giving back most of the rally that followed its record QNX contract. The stock is 12.1% below its October 6 closing peak of $9.58, but it still trades above its 40-week average, so the long-term uptrend is intact. The balance of evidence is now even for the next 2–6 weeks, with medium conviction. That is a step down from the bullish, high-conviction reading of October 28.
The good news arrived on October 20, when BlackBerry's QNX division reported the largest contract in company history. According to Benzinga, the shares rose about 5.9% to $9.38 the next day, helped by a broad software rally. That price was still below the October 6 peak, so the market had already been paying for the QNX story. The contract confirmed it more than it re-rated it.
Friday's drop has no company-specific explanation in the news we have. The backdrop was a broad technology selloff, and Bloomberg reported the TSX's worst day since June, down 1.7%, led by technology and materials. The S&P 500 proxy SPY lost 1.8% on the day and the tech sector fund XLK lost 4.9%. BB fell 8.4%, so it moved with the sector but harder.
Over five days BB is down 5.6%, against 0.6% for SPY and 2.0% for XLK. The market explains very little of that. The sector explains some, and the stock fell about 3.6 points more than XLK, which is the stock's own share. Volume on the drop was only about average for the last 20 days. That points to a sector-driven flush without heavy forced selling in BB, though it does not prove it.
The news feed holds no published debate on BB this week, so the argument has to be read from the numbers. The case for the stock is the contract, relative strength of 1.6% over the S&P 500 and 5.7% over XLK across 50 days, a gain of about 122% this year, and a price well above the 200-day average at $6.86. The case for caution is the analyst view. Seven analysts rate it a hold, with price targets from $6.60 to $13.00 and a mean of $9.80. The price sits 14.1% under that mean, which is upside on paper, but the spread shows analysts disagree widely about what QNX is worth. At a market value near $4.9 billion, much of the good news is in the price.
The long-term thesis is intact. BB is above its 10-week and 40-week averages, the 50-day average at $8.42 sits well above the 200-day, and the stock is up about 56% in six months. It is 34% below its 52-week high of $12.81 and 167% above the low. The phase is a pullback inside an advance, not a trend break.
The earlier report, dated October 28, 2026, was bullish with high conviction. It had the weekly trend and the short-term move pointing the same way, with a weekly close below $8.20 as the line that would change the picture. That line has not been crossed, and the price is just above it. What changed is that Friday's drop erased the alignment: the short-term move now runs against the weekly uptrend, and the price has fallen back exactly to the 50-day average. The pullback is not yet stretched, with the 14-day RSI at 49.7, neither oversold nor strong. Three of four evidence checks still support the trend: the pullback inside the uptrend, leadership over the S&P 500 and XLK, and history. The missing one is alignment, so the reading is even with medium conviction.
The strongest case against an even reading is a positive one. In 151 past cases of a one-day drop of more than 5%, the stock was higher a month later 70.9% of the time, against 61.8% typically, with a median gain of 5.4%. That favours the trend side. It does not tip the balance, because the price has not yet reclaimed any level that shows buyers returning, and the sector that drove Friday's fall is down 8.3% over a month. That is why conviction is not higher.
The structure holds above $8.20, a swing zone, and the first crack comes just below it. The round $8.00 follows, then $7.66, another swing zone. A weekly close below $7.66 would end the trend, since that level marks the base of the advance from the autumn. Below that the next supports are the round $7.00 and the 200-day average at $6.86.
The breakout level is a daily close above $9.00 on volume above the 20-day average. That would be the first sign buyers are back. From $9.00 the math has a stop at $8.05, which is $8.20 less a quarter of the 14-day average range of $0.61. The target is the 52-week high at $12.81, which gives 4.0 to 1 and clears the 3 to 1 bar. The round $10.00 lies on the way and would be the first test of that move.
A weekly close below $7.66 would end the weekly uptrend. The non-price fact that could bring it about is evidence that the QNX contract is not turning into revenue, such as a guidance cut or slower QNX growth in the next quarterly report. On the upside, a daily close above $9.00 on above-average volume would restore the alignment that was lost on Friday.
