adidas AG N (ADS.DE) stock analysis, October 21, 2026: Record quarter lifts shares, but the move looks stretched

Published October 21, 2026 · updated 2026-10-31 · ADS.DE chart, levels and live analysis

adidas AG (ADS.DE) trades at 161.65 EUR after raising its 2026 operating profit guidance to 2.5 billion euros and reporting a record quarter. The balance of evidence for the next 2 to 6 weeks leans positive, with high conviction: the daily trend runs with the weekly uptrend, and the shares lead both the S&P 500 and the consumer discretionary sector. The weak points are a stretched move, with RSI at 88, and breakout math that falls short of 3 to 1.

Why it matters

On October 20, 2026, adidas lifted its full-year operating profit guidance to 2.5 billion euros from 2.3 billion, according to Morningstar. The trigger was about 200 million euros in U.S. tariff refunds, the majority of its total claims. Third-quarter revenue rose 9% year on year. The size of the guidance lift is close to the size of the refund, so much of the raise is a one-off windfall and not proof of a stronger underlying business. The 9% revenue growth is the part that speaks to demand.

The market took it well. The stock rose 2.2% on the day and 4.7% over five days, and it is up 12.9% over a month. Yet it is still down 4.4% for the year and 14.85% below its 52-week high of 189.85 EUR, so this is a recovery inside a larger drawdown. Over five days the S&P 500 (SPY) fell 1.2% while the consumer discretionary ETF (XLY) rose 2.8%. The market was no help, the sector gave a tailwind, and the stock beat the sector by about 1.9 points. That excess is the part the earnings news explains. Volume is 61.8% below its 20-day average, but this reading is taken early in the session, so it should not be over-weighted yet.

The debate around the name is mostly about its rivals. The bearish case sits with peers: Bloomberg reported Wall Street's enthusiasm for Nike at a 25-year low after a Bank of America downgrade to underperform. Forbes argued that Kylian Mbappé's move to On shows challenger brands going after elite athletes. On the other side, Reuters noted On's shares have fallen about 40% this year and that turning the Mbappé deal into sales will be hard. For adidas, the live question is cost. The Wall Street Journal framed roughly $1 billion of marketing spend, including the World Cup push, as something that has to show returns. A record quarter is the first evidence that it is.

On valuation, 29 analysts rate the stock a consensus buy, with a mean price target of 196.46 EUR, 17.7% above the current price. The targets range from 158 EUR to 245 EUR. The price sits just above the lowest target, which says the Street sees room higher but not unanimously how much.

What the evidence says

The long-term trend is up. The price is above both its 10-week and 40-week averages, and the thesis is intact but not yet complete. The stock has recovered above its 200-day average of 154.77 EUR, while the 50-day average at 149.42 EUR is still below it. That is a recovery phase, not a fully established advance, with the 52-week high still far overhead.

For the next 2 to 6 weeks the balance of evidence leans positive, with high conviction: 3 of 4 checks line up. The daily trend runs with the weekly uptrend. The stock leads the S&P 500 by 4.9% over 50 days and XLY by 4.0%. A stock that outperforms both its market and its sector, on fresh good news, usually has buyers behind it.

The strongest case against is the stretch. RSI at 88.46 is extreme, the stock is up nearly 13% in a month, and the 20-day volume comparison is weak. Part of the earnings lift is also a refund that will not repeat. That makes the timing of further gains less certain, not the direction. It does not tip the balance because the trend, relative strength and the guidance raise all point the same way, but it is why this is a lean and not a certainty.

Levels that matter

The structure rests on the 200-day average at 154.77 EUR. A close below it would be the first crack. Under it sit the round 150 EUR level, the 50-day average at 149.42 EUR and the swing zone at 148.08 EUR. Below 148.08 EUR the trend ends, and below that the next supports are 139.38 EUR and the 52-week low of 130.85 EUR.

The breakout level is a daily close above 168.9 EUR on volume above its 20-day average, which would be the first sign that buyers are back in force. From there the first target is 179.62 EUR, the next is the 52-week high at 189.85 EUR, with 175 EUR as a round-number pause on the way. The breakout would be wrong below 153.9 EUR, which is the 200-day average less a quarter of ATR. Against that stop the math gives 0.7 to 1 to the first target and 1.4 to 1 to the second. That is short of the 3 to 1 that makes a breakout worth the risk. The ratio improves only if the entry is closer to the stop, meaning a pullback toward 154.77 EUR, or if the move carries beyond 189.85 EUR toward 200 EUR.

What would change the picture

A weekly close below 148.08 EUR would change the picture, because it would end the trend and undo the recovery above the 200-day average. The non-price fact that would most likely do it is evidence that the profit improvement is only tariff refunds, for example revenue growth fading from the 9% of the third quarter or sign that the World Cup marketing spend is not bringing sales.
